Why
did you become interested in fitness?
I have danced for many years and also cheered. But what actually
"Sparked the Fire" was in Spring of '98' during Basic
Training for the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, and every
morning for 8 weeks we had PT training (Physical Fitness Training)
we had to do pushups, sit-ups, and run. At the end of 8 weeks,
which there were 30 students and the majority were men I won the
"Most Physically Fit" award. So, I started training
more serious and was in my first competition the following year.
When
did you first start working out?
My family got me started on the right track including 10 years
of ballet, tap, jazz, and Pointe training. I never stopped, but
I also cheered from Junior High through College and professionally
for the Atlanta Falcons, and now for the AFL's Georgia Force (Arena
Football). I changed my lifestyle for the better and my husband
had also followed in my footsteps to live a healthier lifestyle.
It is always a pleasure to have people or your friends asking
for advice when it's concerning diet, nutrition, and working out.
What
other physical activities do you enjoy to stay fit?
I enjoy yoga classes to help decrease the stress in my life, and
for flexibility. I enjoy step aerobics, funk aerobics, and I definitely
enjoy dancing/cheering.
What
are your goals within the fitness industry?
To teach other fitness enthusiasts to live a healthier lifestyle
by being physically, mentally, and more spiritually fit. My work
as a Senior Parole Officer reinforces my belief that drug-free
fitness training is a valuable outlet; by being around young people
they all too often channel negative energy in the wrong direction.
So I would want to encourage them to use more "positive"
energy for something more Greater! Also, to be a role model for
African American Women because there are very few in the fitness
industry-not just for them but for "All Women of Color".
Additional Notes
In this road of life one is going to have trials and tribulations;
but for all those competitors in the fitness, bodybuilding, the
obstacle courses, etc. You may not place as high, and you may
fumble, or forget that 8 count, but you need to pick yourself
up, dust yourself off and try again. I love to encourage others
to be true to yourself and being more confident within yourself
especially setting goals, and having dreams. If its being an astronaut,
teacher, engineer, or 'Winning' that fitness competition. I give
thanks to my family and friends for offering guidance, love and
support.
