How (Google) Trendy..
Inspired by a clever article in Sports Illustrated by Steve Rushin, I decided to try out Google's new "Trends" page on a few fitness related searches. For those of you unfamiliar with Trends, it basically gives you a glimpse at what cities across the globe are searching for. Want to see who is searching for "yams" the most? Google Trends will tell you (it's Salt Lake City, by the way).
So without further ado, lets jump right in.
- Probably the most well known person in the sport, Monica Brant seems to have quite the following in South America. Buenos Aires tops the list for searches.
- You'd think that bodybuilding would be a popular topic in the US, but think again. There are no US cities in the Top 10, with all but two being from Australia or Germany.
- Fitness competitions are a popular topic with our friends to the north — Canada. Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver are the top 3 in searching for that term. Where did LA, aka "The Mecca", rank? It's not even listed.
- When you compare searches for figure and fitness competitions, you find out which city is most interested in the sport. And once again, its Calgary.
So that's a little taste of Google Trends, which is still in development, but fun nevertheless. By the way, ever wonder who is searching for Google Trends the most?
Don't worry, neither did I.
